[…] Something Wicked Discussion Prologue & Part I […]
So far I’m really liking the book! I think it’s really interesting and really good. There’s definitely something creepy about the carnival. I feel almost like they came into town to steal people’s souls or something. There’s definitely a sinister feeling, especially considering that Will thought the dwarf was the lightning rod salesmen. I definitely think Will and Jim are going to have to watch out because it seems like Mr. Cooger is going to come after them for sure.
I’m so glad you are liking the book so far! I actually read this before, but it’s such a good book to read around Halloween.
I am kind of biased, though, because Ray Bradbury is my favorite author. I really love his writing style; everything is so poetic. For instance, the whole carnival is creepy and I feel the creepiness, but I’m not really scared because of the way he writes it. It just sounds like there’s beauty in it, although it’s haunting, you know?
I think Jim is fascinated with the carnival because he has some kind of inner dark side to him. Jim and Will are obviously opposites that balance each other out – one light, one dark. I feel like Jim is either trying to find something missing in his life, or trying to find answers to his questions.
What do you think of Will’s dad? I thought the part where he was talking about books with the two boys was interesting, about what kind of books each one read, and he was surprised that Jim didn’t know what kind of books he read. I think that Will’s dad was most likely a “Jim” back then, but something happened that changed him.
What creeps you out more – the Mirror Maze or the Carousel?
I’ve only read a couple short stories by Ray Bradbury but I loved them, so he’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! I agree his writing style is amazing. I love it!
I agree that Jim has this kind of dark side to him. It’s obvious he’s looking for something (though what that thing is, who knows) and the carnival sort of provides him with a possible escape maybe?
I actually really like Will’s dad, he seems like the type of person who knows a lot about others through observation. And of course, he loves the library, so that makes him a great person in my book haha!
The Mirror Maze definitely creeps me out more–there’s obviously something creepy that you see in the maze, and of course the whole thing would be created to disorient you.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about the book at first. I guess I got so used to today’s YA novels, that I feel have been really dumbed down (writing wise) since some of these older children’s books. Once I got used to the writing, though, I started to like it a bit more. I’m curious to see what will happen next and what is in that barber shop?!
I think Mr. Cooper and Mr. Dark kinda already went at Will and Jim. They have, essentially, made their word meaningless to the adults and potentially flagged them as thieves.
I’m guessing that the carnival is stealing people and making them part of the act. Like the lightning rod guy who may now be the dwarf. What ever happened to the nephew anyways?
Not sure what will happen next but am looking forward to finding out.
I tried reading this book a few years ago (never finished), but I’m happy that I like it better this time! I enjoyed Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, so I really wanted to read more of his books.
I agree with Scatty that I found the writing difficult to get used to at first.
