So The Three Nerds have their own book review blogs for all the books that they don't read for the club!
I’m still liking the book but I’m not sure how I’ll feel at the end. I’m currently pissed about Finn and all the talk about ‘recursive and meta’ is just hurting my head.
I’m thinking Jenkins is trying to find a way to go back to the ‘real’ reality and escape this AU that has been created. Though I am curious to see if Scalzi will mention an actual T.V. show that has been warping their reality. Maybe, if we’re getting real wild here with ideas, they’ll go back in time and tell the writer just how bad the show is and it’ll stop.
I really enjoyed the book. I can’t really answer the last two questions, so I don’t give away spoilers, but I wanted to comment on some general things.
I did expect that they would be on a show, but I wasn’t sure if they would explicitly mention Star Trek or not. I think chapter 9 was just so hilarious, because the whole thing was like a senior staff meeting or briefing in an actual Star Trek episode. By the time Jenkins said, “They don’t exist. And neither does this. This is the starship Enterprise. It’s fictional. It was on a science fictional drama series. And so are we” (p. 103) I was just so excited by the buildup to that.
I was really upset about Finn, too. I mean, I know it is called “Redshirts”, but I really hoped it would challenge the idea by not having any of them die. I think the book does a good job of showing what the situation must feel like to everyone on the ship who’s not on the senior staff. You can really tell that they are afraid due to their behavior on away missions and feel badly for them.
I think the whole point of Finn dying (and they mention it, too, later) is he was the reason they decided to take action and do something about it. You know, that little push to get you going.
It’s really interesting to hear things from a Star Trek fan’s perspective, though. Since I never watched Star Trek, I don’t really understand some of the things, but I think it’s good that you can relate to the show.
